10. Bong

ORIGINAL: Pong was based on a game called "Tennis for Two" which simulates playing tennis on an oscilloscope. Physicist William Higginbotham goes down in history as creating one of the first electronic games to use graphical displays.

Concept: The game aims to represent the game of tennis or table tennis (ping pong). Each player has a bat. The bat can be moved vertically. There are two horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the screen. The ball is served and passed to a player - that player must move the paddle to hit the ball. The ball bounces in the opposite direction. Depending on where the ball hits the bat, the ball will move in different directions - if it hits one of the top or bottom lines, it will bounce. The idea is to make the other player lose the ball - thus scoring a point.

Playing the game: Although it looks very boring, the gameplay is actually very addictive. It is easy to play but very difficult to master, especially with its faster ball speeds and sharper 'bounce' angles.

Wistfulness: As far as I might be concerned, this is the dad of computer games. You probably wouldn't have video games without Pong - a craze has begun that will continue to grow and become a multi-billion dollar industry. I will always remember this game!

9. Frogger

Origins: Developed by Konami in 1981, this game was the first game that introduced me to Sega. It was very innovative at the time and introduced a new style of game.

The concept: simple - you want to walk from one side of the street to the other. Wait a minute - there is a lot of traffic; Better to avoid traffic. Few made it - wait, the river put it there. Better jump over those turtles and logs and get to the other side - catch the gator! Ahh! It sounds simple - cars and logs are in horizontal rows, and the number and speed of logs and cars can vary in the direction they are moving. You have to move the frog up, down, left, right, avoid cars, jump on logs, avoid bad creatures, and go back home - do this a few times and you will go to the next level.

Game Play: Another amazingly addictive simple concept. This game is based on time. You find yourself getting sucked in and out of traffic and sometimes getting nowhere. The graphics are bad, and the sound is horrible, but the adrenaline really pumps when you try to avoid the speeding car or the snake that catches you!

Nostalgia: I love this game for many reasons. I've been playing this game for a long time, but never really became an expert - however, it was the first game I was able to reproduce using BASIC on a ZX81 - I even sold about 50 copies in Germany!

8. Space Invaders

Origins: Tomohiro Nishikada, designer of Space Invaders, drew inspiration from Star Wars and War of the Worlds. He created a first-person shooter video game and drew heavily from the gameplay capabilities of Breakout.

Concept: Aliens invade Earth in "blocks", slowly descending to the bottom of the screen. It is your job to use your only laser cannon as a brave savior of the earth, move horizontally and blast those pesky aliens from the sky. Luckily, there are four bases to hide behind - they eventually disintegrate, but they do provide some protection from alien missiles.

Game Play: This is a very repetitive, yet highly addictive game. Each wave starts a little closer to you, and moves a little faster - so each new wave is a harder challenge. The game involves a fair amount of strategy as well as good hand-eye coordination.

Wistfulness: As far as I might be concerned, this is the dad of computer games. When green aliens originally invaded, some clever geek added ribbons of color to the screen and the aliens magically changed the color as little as possible - it was as high-tech as the days of monochrome video games!

7. Galaxies

Origins: Galaxians expands on the Space Invaders theme by having the aliens pounce on the Defenders. It is one of the first games to have colorful sprites.

The idea: Take a space invader, add some color, remove the bases, and throw some aliens at you and you have a Galaxian. The idea is basically the same as that of Space Invaders, you defend the world against alien invaders, but instead of a screen full of aliens coming at you in a nice organized fashion, you have groups of aliens descending in a random fashion.

Gameplay: If you like space invaders, you will love this. Tactics vary, as you often have to dodge two or three different groups of alien 'superheroes', but if you manage to shoot them while they're shooting, you'll get some nice bonus points. The game is hard until you get used to some of the modes

Nostalgia: This was one of the first games played on a desktop computer that was almost as famous as arcade games. I had an old Acorn Electron and this one was almost perfect
